Silverlight with SharePoint and Excel for Education

During BETT Microsoft presented several areas which included the Microsoft Learning Gateway and future technologies such as SilverLight, Surface and PopFly. Another one of the presentations was on a new graphical interface the UK educational team are working on for excel tracking sheets. The aim is for it to work both with Excel and SharePoint. The interface is built with SilverLight and pulls information on the pupils from fields and deliveries it both to pupils and staff. The teacher can see the pupil's data including attendance, average grade and emotional intelligence and can also filter these by sex, reading age above/below average and grades above/below average. The image below shows the front page as a staff member would see with average grade and no filters. The image below that shows a filter with just females. It may look like the images of the pupils are random but the higher they are to the top right the better score they are receiving according to their attendance and average grade. The interface also allows you to select pupils and compare them, click here for image 1 and image 2. You can also see each pupil in a report view - taking the image below you can see the attendance for the user and see that his attendance isn't the best. Where there is a 1 an intervention has taken place. Whether this is a letter home or just a chat you can see if a difference has be made by looking at the line graph. Other features at the moment are a careers program that the...

Introduction to the Microsoft Learning Gateway

The Microsoft Learning Gateway (MLG) consists of many products from Microsoft from Windows Operating Systems to the Office System. SharePoint is a product that is required to make up the MLG but other products that can be added, these are not necessary to make up your MLG. What does Microsoft say on the Learning Gateway? “The Learning Gateway from Microsoft is a solutions framework that helps improve education by integrating the tools you already use and putting them to work connecting people with the information and processes they need to teach and learn more effectively. “ It’s all about using Microsoft technology in teaching and learning. How it is used depends on the school/college/university and the processes within the school. What products does it include? Well it could be any of the Microsoft products – it depends on how you use it in teaching and learning. SharePoint is the main product as it can deliver content to the pupil through a web page but here is a possible list. Learning Gateway Version 3 includes the below list but you can use previous versions as they can be integrated as well. · Windows 2003 Server o All products are installed on the latest Windows Server technology o www.microsoft.com/windows2003/ · Active Directory o AD is used as the log on service for all users o www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/directory/activedirectory/ · SQL Server 2005 o The database server used for SharePoint, SharePoint Learning Kit as well as other products o www...

Microsoft teamed up to HiSoftware to develop templates, master pages and webparts to help individuals with disabilities, especially those with vision impairment. HiSoftware have ensured they are W3C which is something some of my schools have been crying out for to help with their kids. One of my schools I look after directory are a special needs school and will be very happy with this. Education Presentation: Collobration and Networking in SharePoint

I've been asked to give a 5 - 10 minute presentation on the technologies I use in my school at Microsoft next month. One thing I am keen on is networking with others to find out what they are doing, how I can help them and how they can help me to improve my SharePoint environment. In the first 5 minutes i want to talk about the collobration between the 10 schools that are on my sharepoint and how they work together as steering groups and produce learning resources to share and save time. In the other half i want to talk about how important it is for someone to network to improve their sharepoint environment, whether this is a teacher, pupil or sharepoint administrator. I have found by doing this my sharepoint knowledge has grown, features have been added and have improved learning generally in my school. I want to know your stories as part of my research for my presentation - do you do much networking, what sites do you use to help you - has it improved your sharepoint environment! SharePoint Learning Kit: Part 3 - rewriten and shorter.

I have decided to rewrite my last post - not happy with it going to shorten it. I thought for part 3 I would give a bit of a work through of SLK and assigning a document to a pupil. Install SLK Create a new Team Site Give your learners view access to your site Give your instructor for that class members access Enable SharePoint Learning Kit for that site Go to Site Actions Go to Site Settings Under Site Administration go to Site Features Make sure SharePoint Learning Kit is Activated You now need to tell SLK which users are learners and instructors. Go to Site Actions Go to Site Settings Under Users and Permissions go to Advanced Permissions Click on Visitors and check SLK Learners Click on Members and check SLK Instructors As part of the download of SLK, Microsoft has provided a SCORM learning resource called solitaire.zip. Upload this to your documents library within this site. When the documents has uploaded click on the downwards arrow next to the document name and click on E-Learning Actions. You will now see your site name in the middle of the screen. Click on your site name. You can now give a date and time for the assign to go to learners. A due date, if you want students to see the answers after you have returned it to them. You can also select which learners to assign it to. I've added screen shots to my photo album of this. Have a look. Posted on SharePoint Blogs Del.icio.us | Digg It | Technorati | Blinklist | Furl | reddit | DotNetKicks
